Will Visa Debit cards work in Taiwan?

What is a Visa debit card? A Visa debit card(also known as a Visa 金融卡 in Taiwan) is a plastic card that provides an alternative payment method to cash when making purchases. Functionally, it can be called an electronic cheque, as the funds are withdrawn directly from either the bank account, or from the remaining balance on the card. In some cases, the cards are designed exclusively for use on the Internet, and so there is no physical card.

If you want to travel to Taiwan and use the Visa debit card. You should read Taiwan travel guide. “If you've forgotten to bring any money at all, but have your credit or debit card handy, there's no need to fret. Taiwan's banking system is light-years ahead of most other countries, with the ability to use any of the abundant 24-hour ATMs to withdraw cash from anywhere in the world using the Plus or Cirrus systems. Certain banks' ATMs will even tell you your available balance in your own currency or in NT$. There is a per transaction limit of $20,000 for ATM cash withdrawals (HSBC Global Access customers may withdraw $30,000 from HSBC ATMs). Visa debit cards are not accepted in many places, but can be used at ATMs in Chinatrust Banks (but not those in 7-11s).” Well…it is true that Taiwan's banking system is light-years ahead of most other countries. I think it’s very convenient. There are many ATMs In the city. So you do not worry about your Visa debit card. But I suggest you should withdraw cash as soon as possible because there are few banks in the country. And Visa debit cards can not only be used at ATMs in Chinatrust Banks. I think the following banks should be used at ATMs:

  • Chunghwa Post Co. Ltd(中華郵政公司)
  • TAICHUNG COMMERCIAL BANK(台中商業銀行)
  • Fubon Financial (台北富邦商業銀行)
  • Taishin International Bank (台新國際商業銀行)
  • Taiwan Business Bank (台灣中小企業銀行)
  • Shin Kong Financial Holding Co., Ltd (台灣新光商業銀行
  • TCB (合作商業金庫銀行)
  • Mega International Commercial Bank (兆豐國際商業銀行)
  • HSBC Bank (Taiwan)  (香港上海匯豐銀行)
  • First Commercial Bank (第一商業銀行)
  • Cathay United Bank (國泰世華商業銀行)
  • Hua Nan Bank (華南商業銀行)
  • Standard Chartered Bank (渣打國際商業銀行)
  • Bank of Taiwan (臺灣銀行)
  • Union Bank of Taiwan (聯邦商業銀行)

    1. The snapshots in CHINA: Portrait of a People are not meant to be works of art. I was too preoccupied with participating, with reveling in the moment, to worry about their perfection. Their purpose, then, is to form a candid portrait of China exactly as China presented itself to me. Cheap Flights to mauritius
